Did you know that there is a fund-raising initiative to raise funds for canine cancer research?  Did you know it is right here in Alberta?  It is true!  The Smiling Blue Skies Walk to End Canine Cancer takes place annually in Calgary, Alberta, normally the first Sunday in May.

Last year this dynamic group of people raised a staggering $30,000+ for canine cancer research.  All of the funds raised go directly to the OVC Pet Trust – Smiling Blue Skies Cancer Fund at the Ontario Veterinary College.

This amazing walk was founded by Suzi Beber who has lost her beloved Goldens to cancer.

Ch. Shacoram's Legendary Lady CD RL1 CGN HIC TT - "Jez" She was 9.5 years old when that photo was taken. She did the 4 km walk last year. She was so excited that she practically ran the first 3 km and then I almost had to carry her the last km. LOL! She sure slept good that night :0)

Since its founding it has grown into becoming one of the major fund-raising efforts for cancer research.  We all know that Rottweilers as a breed are hugely affected by this horrible disease.  As in Goldens, it is true in Rottweilers, if you own this breed it is not a question of IF you will lose a dog to cancer, it is a matter of WHEN.

Please take a moment to consider donating or participating in this great cause!  You can learn more by visiting the Smiling Blue Skies website. Together, we CAN make a difference!!

There are a few Rottweiler Club of Canada members that are active participants in this walk each year.  Come out and join us!

The first year I walked this walk with Lucy - last year I walked in memory of Lucy and this year I will be walking in memory of both Lucy and Moxie. Their spirits will be walking along side with me. Gwen Haynes

Kamo - loved by Dawn Phillips - lost to cancer

I am participating in this walk in honor of my best friend ... Kamo. I lost my most handsome boy on November 10th, 2010 just 2 months before his 4th birthday. Kamo fought a valiant fight and kept his amazing happy personality and super smile throughout his whole 9 month journey. Through 2 surgeries, 7 weeks of radiation and chemo therapy, my guy gave it his all. Dawn Phillps
